Association of Hazaras to translate fire safety information into Dari for Home Fire Awareness Project

Geordie Cowan, Greater Dandenong Leader

A SPRINGVALE-based organisation is breaking down language barriers to spread the word about fire safety.

The Association of Hazaras in Victoria aims to educate the Afghan community in Casey and Greater Dandenong about how to reduce the risk of fires in the home by translating useful information into Dari as part of the Home Fire Awareness Project.

Association grants officer Lisa Mohammadi said the Hazara community needed educating because most were newly-arrived refugees or migrants.

“Even though a lot of information is available, it’s all in English,” she said. “Our people have language barriers and they are also not as technologically savvy, so it is difficult to access and understand information.”

The association will create brochures and also hold information sessions.

The program is expected to start running in February.
